Traeger grilled salmon recipe

If you’ve ever cooked salmon and were left thinking it could be better, cooking it on the Traeger will get you there! It’s the best way to cook salmon because it’s harder to overcook it.

Living in the Pacific Northwest, salmon has always been a part of what we cook and eat. It wasn’t until I started cooking it on the Traeger that I had the best salmon of my life.

This next-level salmon is left with a little smoky flavor and the best results you could ask for.

Why a Traeger is my favorite

ATraeger grillis different than a regular barbeque – it’s an electric wood pellet grill that also can be used as a smoker. It burns wood chips or pellets.

The way that it cooks meat in a slower way than a barbeque or an oven leaves you with moist meat with great flavor.

It’s electric and easy to use – simply get your Traeger smoking and then set the Traeger temperature to your desired heat and cook your meat!

Salmon is a great place to start, so if you’re new to cooking with a Traeger, prepare to impress yourself! Another great recipe to try isTraeger Burgers!

Different types of salmon to use with this recipe

There are so many different types of salmon to use, from Alaskan salmon to Atlantic salmon, fillets to the whole salmon.

My favorite choice is king salmon, but if you’re looking at price, it’s at the top of the salmon list as far as expense. It’s a high quality fish. Maybe that’s why it’s so yummy!

For more affordable salmon options, look for sockeye salmon and coho salmon. These fresh salmon options can often be found at grocery stores in the fish department, or also frozen. Both are good choices for cooking on the Traeger smoker.

While not actually a salmon, steelhead would be another good choice. It looks like salmon, has the same pink color, and is quite delicious!

I find that you can get a better price per pound by purchasing whole salmon instead of salmon filets.

The thickness of your salmon and whether you choose salmon fillets or whole salmon will determine the amount of time needed to cook the salmon.

In the recipe card note section, I’m sharing how to determine how long to cook your salmon.

Add the fresh lemon slices and your salmon is ready to cook!
  3. When the grill is up to temperature, place the piece of salmon on the grill grates with thesalmon skin side down. Close the lid and cook for 20-25 minutes until the salmon flakes easily. How to cook salmon on a barbeque

Don’t have a Traeger grill or smoker? Here’s how to cook on a gas grill or charcoal grill.

Flavor and prepare the salmon in the same way as for a Traeger, but instead heat your BBQ to medium heat. Place salmon on the heated grill grates and cook for 15-20 minutes with the lid closed, or until the salmon is cooked to your liking.

A barbeque will cook the salmon a bit quicker than a Traeger grill.

This is my go-to wild-caught salmon recipe that leaves you with delicious fish.

FAQs

Is it better to grill salmon in foil or not? ›

If you're looking to cook a large fillet of salmon on the grill, wrap it in foil! It's much easier to manage this way, and you'll get a tender piece of fish that is impressive looking. This method takes about 14 to 18 minutes.

What are the best pellets for salmon on a Traeger? ›

When smoking salmon, selecting the perfect pellets is key to enhancing its buttery essence. Our Signature Blend and Mesquite pellets stand out, infusing the fillet with a captivating smokiness, thanks to their bold flavors.

What temp should I grill salmon? ›

How hot should your grill be to cook salmon? I recommend grilling salmon at a medium-high heat, or 375 to 400 degrees F so that it gives the salmon a nice char while sealing in all of the moisture. This will prevent the salmon from overcooking.

Is it better to grill fish in foil or on the grill? ›

It's easy: Have no fear of your prized perch sticking to hot grill grates. Take the gamble out of grilling fish by making a foil basket instead. It's quick: The foil conducts heat and helps to steam fish in just minutes. It holds up: Delicate, flaky fillets can't stand up against many forms of cooking.

Do I have to brine salmon before smoking? ›

The key is dry brining and letting the surface of the fish dry well before you smoke it. With your average coho or sockeye, this will provide nice, thick chunks of oily smoked salmon (the thick parts of the filets), and drier, thinner pieces (the section near the tail).

What temperature is salmon done on the Traeger grill? ›

Insert the probe into the center of the fillet. Place the salmon, skin-side down, directly on the grill grates, close the lid, and smoke until the internal temperature reaches 140℉, 3-4 hours. Enjoy warm or chilled.

How long to smoke salmon on pellet grill at 350? ›

If grilling, set temperature to 350° F and cook for 15-25 minutes, see more information here. If smoking salmon, smoke for 30 minutes then cook for an additional hour at 225° F, see more information here. Enjoy the natural wood-fired flavor from your Traeger grill.

How do you know when salmon is done smoking? ›

Smoker Temperature and Meat Pull Temperature

Harold McGee gives a recommended internal temperature range of 120-135°F (49-57°C) for fish because that is the point when its tender protein begins to firm and turn opaque, yet is still juicy. Higher temperatures will yield a salmon fillet that is too dry.

How do you know when salmon is done on the smoker? ›

You want the internal temperature of the salmon to be at 150°F or higher. TIP – Salmon should be a rich pink after smoking. Look for the meat to begin flaking apart to know when to check the internal temperature for doneness.

How long to cook salmon on Traeger at 225? ›

Insert the probe into the center of the fillet. Place the salmon, skin-side down, directly on the grill grates, close the lid, and smoke until the internal temperature reaches 140℉, 3-4 hours.

Do you grill salmon with lid open or closed? ›

Close the lid and let the salmon cook for 3-4 minutes. Before flipping, check to see if the salmon is sticking to the grates. If it is sticking, then it needs to cook a little longer. Check back in another minute.

Should salmon be room temp before grilling? ›

For even cooking, you'll want to let the salmon come to room temperature for 20 minutes before grilling. Set the salmon on a paper towel-lined pan and pat dry. A dry surface speeds up the searing process and prevents sticking. If it's marinated, blot off as much marinade as possible before grilling.

Can you grill salmon on aluminum foil? ›

Fold the tops of pieces of foil together, leaving the sides open. Tent the foil for heat circulation. Place foil packets on the preheated grill and cook until salmon is easily flaked with a fork, 15 to 25 minutes, opening foil during the last 5 minutes to lightly brown.

Is it better to grill with or without aluminum foil? ›

Don't line the grill grates with foil either. It restricts the airflow in the grill which can be a fire hazard. Lining your grill grates with aluminum foil doesn't allow the juices and fat to drain naturally. They will pool up inside the foil.

Do you need to flip salmon in foil? ›

This grilled-salmon-in-foil method is dependable and stress-free because there's no flipping required, and the foil keeps the fish skin from sticking to your grill grates and causing a mess that can also result in the loss of your precious protein.

How to properly grill salmon? ›

Grill the salmon on a 450°-500° F hot grill.

The number one way to ensure success when grilling fish is a smoking hot grill. Cook for skin side down for about 6-8 minutes on hot grates to ensure the fish (or any other protein) won't stick to the grates and will lift easily away once it's done.

Should you grill fish on foil? ›

Grilling fish in foil is the best solution. It keeps the fish intact, locks in moisture and helps the heat distribute evenly. It also allows you to add in herbs and aromatics to perfectly season your grilled fish fillets.
